WHITE RIBBON ALLIANCE NIGERIA – BREAKING NEW GROUND IN SELF-CARE

Over the past four years, WRA Nigeria has made unprecedented progress in achieving self-care for sexual and reproductive health, in collaboration with John Snow International, Society for Family Health, Pathfinder International and WHO.

Nigeria became the first country to create National Self-Care Guidelines, adopted in over 24 states during 2024. A National Self-Care Coordination Committee, led by the Federal Ministry of Health (FMoH), and the Self-Care Advocacy Network, led by WRA Nigeria, is supporting self-care initiatives, while a comprehensive demand generation strategy for self-care in Nigeria has been developed.

WRA Nigeria is also spearheading the formation of Self-Care Coordination Committees at the sub-national level, led by the Ministry of Health. And in another first, WRA Nigeria, IRC and the FMoH launched  ‘Self-care in Humanitarian Settings’, starting with Borno State in September 2023.

Meanwhile, the new WRA Nigeria Podcast, ‘VOICES FOR SELF CARE; MOVING FROM POLICY TO PRACTICE’, launches in September 2024.

WHITE RIBBON ALLIANCE NIGERIA – MAKING WAVES IN WASH

WRA Nigeria’s advocacy has led to improvements in more than 35 health facilities in Niger State, where running water and handwashing stations, drums for waste disposal, and clean toilets have been installed. The Niger State Commissioner for Health also increased the required number of toilets from three to six, because that’s what women said mattered most to them.
